Southampton are preparing for a major change at the club at a crucial time of the season, with just eight games left to play.
On Monday evening, the club sacked manager Mauricio Pellegrino after a dismal run in the top flight.
The Argentine took up the vacancy left by Claude Puel just last summer, but he has only managed to guide the team to five wins in 30 matches.
As a result, the club sit just one point above the relegation zone, and now they find themselves in an even more stressful situation without a manager.
As expected, numerous names have been tossed around as possible candidates for the role, and now former Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has entered the fray.
According to BBC Sport, the 54-year-old is in talks with the Saints regarding the vacancy.
Hughes has been out of work since January when he was sacked by Stoke after the club dropped into the relegation zone.
Southampton fans had put Carlo Ancelotti on their wish list, but it looks as though Hughes’s appointment is edging closer.
People forget one thing about Hughes he’s one of the most likely managers to play to up top #saintsfc

Plenty of #saintsfc fans saying "Not Mark Hughes" but not putting any other name forward so, who would you appoint?

Hughes? Another from the Premier League Merry Go-Round. When will clubs decide to choose fresh faces and ideas and not Allardyce, Hodgson, Moyes, Redknapp, Pulis, Pardew or Hughes? There must be uk talent out there? #saintsfc

It’s strange there’s been times in Mark Hughes’s managerial career where I really would have him at #saintsfc and times when I really wouldn’t want him like now. It’s probably 50/50 but he’s still a better option than what we had.

😏😏😏😏😏Mark Hughes not sure but will get behind him and the team, if he’s the new manager. #saintsfc

Biting my tongue on the appointment of Mark Hughes. For me it’ll come down to whether he gets a full contract in the summer?
If so (even if he keeps us up) it’ll show our level has significantly dropped.
Praying we have eyes on a long term replacement come June/July. #saintsfc

Seriously though #saintsfc fans we don't have to be slagging off a man who has not been announced yet. Even if Hughes is our manager ffs get behind him!
