Southampton are one of several Premier League clubs reportedly taking an interest in Rangers ace Glen Kamara ahead of the summer transfer window, and if he were to join, he could be an upgrade on Ibrahima Diallo in the Saints’ midfield.
According to TEAMtalk, Southampton join Leeds United, Everton, Monaco, Lille and Borussia Dortmund in having watched the Finland international recently as they ponder a move for him this summer.
The 25-year-old has been a mainstay in Steven Gerrard’s side this season and has been hugely influential in both their title win and their strong run in the Europa League. In 28 Scottish Premiership appearances, the former Arsenal youngster has contributed one goal and one assist, averaging a strong 6.9 WhoScored rating for his performances.
The £4.05m-rated man departed Arsenal in 2017 and joined Dundee on a free transfer, with their manager at the time Neil McCann full of praise for the midfielder as he explained why he was so keen to sign the Finland midfielder, saying:
“Within 10 minutes of training, I knew we had to sign him. I was looking for a player who was brave enough to go and take the ball from the goalkeeper and centre-backs to build from the back.
“He isn’t a big, physical lad but he’s made of iron and really strong. I knew immediately that he could handle the ball under pressure and not give it away, so he was perfect.”
His £50,000 move from Dundee to Rangers has since been labelled the “biggest steal of the century” by fellow Gers midfielder Scott Arfield, and Southampton may be able to pull off a similar bargain if they convince Kamara to make the move to St Mary’s this summer.
If he were to join, he would arguably be an upgrade on Diallo despite the Frenchman’s solid start to life on the south coast.
Diallo has averaged a fairly disappointing 6.35 WhoScored rating for his performances in the Premier League this season, averaging 1.5 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 0.3 dribbles per game.
Kamara has averaged 1 tackle, 0.9 interceptions and 0.3 dribbles per game in the Scottish top flight but has emphasised his class in the Europa League, averaging 1.5 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 0.5 dribbles in that competition. (WhoScored)
He also has the better of the 22-year-old when it comes to more offensive play, as he has averaged 0.9 key passes, 65.9 passes and a 90.5% pass accuracy in the Scottish top flight this season, compared to the 0.4 key passes, 28 passes and 85.2% accuracy averaged by Diallo in the Premier League.
Therefore, whilst Diallo could have a big future at Southampton, Martin Semmens might sign Hasenhuttl an immediate upgrade on the young Frenchman if he were to bring Kamara – hailed as a “class act” by Gerrard in 2019 – to St Mary’s this summer.
