Journalist Dean Jones has urged Southampton to replace Nathan Jones with Jesse Marsch amid growing uncertainty over the manager's position.

What’s the word?

Earlier this week, the Leeds United boss was sacked from his position at the Premier League club, leaving the Whites just one place above the bottom three. However, the American's former team are at least better off than the Saints who have fallen to the very bottom of the division under the management of Jones. The Southampton boss has faced heavy criticism in the press of late, especially after an "erratic" recent interview, and it feels as though he could be the league's next managerial sacking. While speaking about it all on Chasing Green Arrows, Jones claimed that the club were interested in Marsch in the past and he could now be the man to come in and replace Jones who is on the brink. He said: "I mean, Southampton were interested in him before he went to Leeds, and they are on the verge of making a decision over whether to back Nathan Jones or not. "If I was them, I would probably be like, 'right, get Nathan Jones out and get Jesse Marsch in'. I don't think that will be a bad place to be. "He'd have so much determination to bounce back, it really can't be that much worse than what Nathan Jones is managing to do right now. So that would be really interesting."

Right man for the job?

Nathan Jones' bizarre interview was prompted after the 3-0 defeat away at Brentford last weekend. That loss means that he has now lost six of his first seven Premier League games so far. With that in mind, it's easy to see why the club board may already be planning on sacking the manager. What's more, with Marsch now back on the market, they could have an ideal candidate. After all, the American has learnt a lot of his trade working with Red Bull-affiliated clubs such as New York Red Bulls, RB Leipzig, and RB Salzburg. Seeing as former Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl also worked at Leipzig, both men are familiar with the 4-2-2-2 formation that has been used at Southampton in recent years. Indeed, Marsch used that setup at Leeds and so if he was hired, he could employ it again on the south coast and a lot of the players would at least have a familiarity with it meaning a transition could be smooth. This certainly looks like something to keep an eye out for if Jones does get the sack.
