Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl could be set for a huge boost in his hopes of retaining Danny Ings this summer, after Carlton Palmer's recent claim on the England international.

Speaking to ThisisFutbol, the former Saints defender said:

Danny’s done well at Southampton, you know, after his horrific injuries. He’s done really well at Southampton.

“What I was hearing is he was linked to go into Spurs. Now Jose’s left Spurs, that could all change.”

Jose Mourinho was said to be the man behind the North London club's interest in Ings ahead of the summer, so it seems fair to suggest that they might not pursue the Southampton striker now that the Portuguese manager has been sacked.

Ings' contract at St Mary's is set to expire at the end of next season but Hasenhuttl has repeatedly affirmed that he won't be allowed to leave this summer and should Spurs retract their interest in the England international, then this seems a much more realistic goal.

Manchester City are another side who are said to be interested in the former Liverpool man, so there is still a possibility that he departs but it would definitely be a boost for the Austrian manager if Spurs were no longer interested, as he arguably would have had much more chance of being a regular at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium compared to the Etihad, where Pep Guardiola has played without a striker for much of the season.

Ings has enjoyed a superb spell with Southampton so far, most notably when he hit 22 goals in the top-flight last season, which led former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe to sing his praises, saying:

“The most impressive thing about Danny is, of course, he’s an outstanding player.

“Technically he’s very good, plays with real intelligence and the way he’s come back from his disappointments, the injury setbacks he’s had, the way he’s fought back and kept his mental strength has been hugely impressive.”

Although injury problems have disrupted his 2020/21 season, it is clear that Ings is a hugely important player in Hasenhuttl's side and he is clearly desperate to keep him for the long term, so if Palmer's claim about Spurs proves to be true, then it will undoubtedly be a huge boost to the Austrian's hopes of keeping him at St Mary's.
