Southampton’s reported hopes of signing Arnaut Danjuma this summer have been dealt a blow after Bournemouth named a huge asking price for the Dutch winger.
Southampton were regularly linked with a move for the former Club Brugge man earlier in the summer after his superb performances for Bournemouth in the Championship last season.
However, it seems as if any chance of Southampton signing him this summer are now over, with the Cherries reportedly set to demand £35m for the 24-year-old as he continues to attract interest from elsewhere.
It is no surprise to see Bournemouth desperate to keep hold of the winger, as he was their key player last season as they were defeated in the playoffs, and new manager Scott Parker will surely be targeting promotion back to the top-flight in the hope that Danjuma can be the main driving force once again.
The Dutchman would make 35 appearances in the second tier, contributing an impressive 17 goals and seven assists, which helped him average a superb 7.21 rating from WhoScored for his performances.
This was comfortably the best of any player at Bournemouth, whilst it also would’ve been enough to rank him as the top performer in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton side last season, so it seems clear that he would’ve been an excellent addition to the Austrian’s squad this summer.
Considering all the wingers in Southampton’s squad, Stuart Armstrong would finish as the top goalscorer in the Premier League with just four goals, you could definitely argue that this is a position that the Saints should be looking to strengthen this summer, and Danjuma could’ve been the ideal man to step up and add more goals and assists for Hasenhuttl’s side from the wing.
Former Bournemouth boss Jonathan Woodgate certainly seems to rate him highly, as he sang his praises last season, saying:
“He’s an exceptional player, in a really good place at the minute, Arnie. He’s another one who I’ve always done a lot of work on him at his previous clubs, so I knew all about him coming into this role, I knew what type of player he was.
“I know last season that he didn’t really get a run in the Premier League and he maybe found it a bit difficult to get game time, but this season he’s been outstanding. I can only talk of what he’s done under my reign, but at the minute, he’s playing some exceptional football, and what else he is doing is working for the team.”
Therefore, it is a real blow for Southampton that Bournemouth are reportedly demanding so much for Danjuma and Saints fans will surely be gutted that a player of his quality seemingly won’t be arriving at St Mary’s ahead of next season.
