Southampton: Saints suffer Marc Guehi blow

Southampton look set to miss out on yet another summer transfer target, with reports suggesting that Marc Guehi is close to joining Crystal Palace from Chelsea, which is undoubtedly a blow to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

What’s the word?

The Athletic credited Southampton with an interest in the England U’21 international earlier in the summer, following his impressive performances on loan at Swansea City in the last two seasons.

It was suggested at the time that Chelsea may look to send the centre-back out on loan for a third successive season but he now looks set for a permanent move away from Stamford Bridge, with David Ornstein reporting recently that he is set to join Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace side on a five-year deal.

Should Southampton have signed Guehi?

Guehi has been an integral part of Swansea’s side in the Championship for the past two seasons and was one of the key reasons behind their impressive defensive record last season, which helped them earn a place in the play-off final, where they were beaten by Brentford.

The 21-year-old would make 43 appearances for Steve Cooper’s side in the Championship, averaging an impressive 6.90 rating from WhoScored for his performances, so it is no surprise to see him earn a Premier League move.

Given that Southampton conceded the second-most goals in the Premier League last season, Guehi could have been a solid addition and given Hasenhuttl some excellent strength in depth at centre-back, as well as offering a great option for the future.

With Jannik Vestergaard being heavily linked with a move away from St Mary’s, missing out on Guehi feels like a deal Southampton may well regret not doing in the near future, especially if he is able to impress with Vieira at Selhurst Park.

The defender is certainly held in high regard by his England U’21 teammates, with Josef Bursik dubbing him an “absolute tank” and a “brick wall” when asked to name the strongest player in the squad.
