Southampton: Potential Johnstone signing would surely see Forster leave

Southampton have recently been linked with Sam Johnstone and if he were to join next summer, then we will surely see Fraser Forster leave St Mary’s.

According to The Athletic’s Dan Sheldon, Southampton are keen to add a new goalkeeper to their ranks next summer and have already identified targets, with West Brom’s Johnstone high up on their list.

The England international’s contract with the Baggies is currently set to expire at the end of this season, so he could join the Saints on a free transfer, which would surely represent excellent business by Martin Semmens.

In the second half of last season, Ralph Hasenhuttl rotated between Alex McCarthy and Forster as his first-choice between the sticks but it seems as if the Austrian has put his faith in the former, as the 31-year-old has started all three Premier League games thus far and was recently handed a new deal at the club.

Forster, meanwhile, remains one of the highest earners at St Mary’s and therefore, he looks set to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of this season, so it is no surprise that Southampton are being heavily linked with a potential replacement in Johnstone.

The 28-year-old was in impressive form at West Brom last season despite them conceding the most goals in the Premier League and he earned himself a call-up to the England side for the Euros and started the 4-0 win against Andorra in World Cup qualifying on Sunday.

Micah Richards is a big fan of the shot-stopper and sang his praises last season, dubbing him “exceptional” on Match of the Day, whilst also commenting on his “outstanding” season with West Brom regardless of their woes in the top-flight.

Therefore, a move for Johnstone makes a lot of sense for Southampton and Martin Semmens should definitely look to sign him next summer, even if it means Forster leaving the club as a result.

And, in other news… Hasenhuttl may already have his next JWP at Southampton in 17 y/o who is “getting stronger every day”
