Southampton could sign their own Grealish in Callum Hudson-Odoi

Southampton have been linked with signing Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi recently and he could prove to be Ralph Hasenhuttl’s own version of Jack Grealish at St Mary’s.

It was confirmed by Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano last week that Southampton had enquired about signing the 21-year-old on loan, as he seeks regular game time away from Stamford Bridge.

Saints fans have seen the benefit of loan deals for young players in recent seasons, with Armando Broja impressing on loan from the Blues last season courtesy of his nine goals, while Kyle Walker-Peters was such a hit that he made his move permanent from Tottenham Hotspur.

There also seems no reason why, if Hudson-Odoi were to enjoy a potential loan spell at the club, he wouldn’t join on a permanent deal in the future.

Hudson-Odoi was limited to just 15 appearances in the Premier League last season, in which he contributed only one goal and three assists.

Frank Lampard knows all about being a promising young English talent and he was full of praise for the young winger during his time as Chelsea boss.

He said: “I know what a player he is. He can be an incredible player and he has improvements to make, and I want to work with him to do it.”

However, with regular game time, he could prove to be much more of a threat, as the vast majority of his appearances came in cup competitions or from the bench.

According to FbRef, the fourth-most similar player to Hudson-Odoi in terms of play style is Manchester City winger Jack Grealish, who signed for the club from Aston Villa in a record £100m deal last summer.

Across their respective careers, Grealish and Hudson-Odoi have averaged very similar statistics in terms of goals and assists per 90 minutes (0.37 vs 0.41), pass completion percentage (81.0 vs 81.1) and shots on target per 90 (0.6 vs 0.57).

Meanwhile, WhoScored suggests that both Grealish and Hudson-Odoi excel at holding onto the ball, dribbling and playing key passes, while they also like to cut inside, usually from the left-hand side onto their stronger right foot.

This emphasises that they have very similar styles of play and if Southampton can bring him in this summer and help him develop in the same way that Grealish has, he could perhaps go on to establish himself as a £100m player in the future.
