Southampton find themselves bottom of the Premier League table having scored just 17 goals in 20 matches so far this season, and Nathan Jones will be urgently looking to add some firepower to his squad before the transfer window slams shut tomorrow night.

Although a centre-forward remains a high priority headlining into deadline day, the Saints have been linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur winger Lucas Moura.

According to The Sun, Spurs could let Moura leave this week, especially having signed Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal recently, and this could give Jones some degree of hope that a potential deal can be struck.

With the Brazilian's contract expiring in the summer, the Saints could grab themselves a bargain; and considering their evident goalscoring woes, they need someone who can find the net on a regular basis now rather than waiting until the summer.

It hasn’t all been plain sailing since Walcott returned to his boyhood club in the summer of 2020 following a spell at Everton, scoring just three goals in 41 appearances during his second spell with the Saints, and the 33-year-old has featured just six times this season.

It’s clear that Jones needs a new attacking threat on the right wing, especially since Walcott has struggled with injury this term. Moura could slot into Southampton’s side with ease, despite enduring what can only be described as an underwhelming campaign under Antonio Conte.

The Brazilian has yet to score this season for the first team while earning an average rating of 6.62/10 via Sofascore for his Premier League performances, although his previous success would hint that he could be a worthwhile option for the Saints to pursue.

Last season, the £90k-per-week ace scored six goals and registered eight assists while taking 1.1 shots per game, creating 11 big chances and making one key pass per match, clearly proving his attacking quality from a wide position as he earned a Sofascore rating of 7.00.

Compare this to Walcott, who created zero big chances and averaged just 0.1 key passes and 0.7 shots per match in 2021/22 to earn a 6.46 Sofascore rating, and the difference in quality is evident, although Moura did play more regularly during the campaign.

Journalist James Ducker praised the Spurs winger back in 2019 for his “incredible quality”, and if the 30-year-old can replicate his form from last term with a move to St Mary's, then Jones could head into the final few months of the season with high hopes of Southampton retaining their top-flight status.
