When we say that Southend United are not really the spending types, we truly mean it. Just the fact that they haven’t broken their transfer record in over 20 years tells us enough about that as well. And it’s quite interesting to note that the only big transfer that’s on their books in the last ten years is that of Michael Timlin from 2011/12 for £203,000 from Swindon Town and the rest all happened prior to 2010 and, the vast majority, in the 90s.
At number one we have Mike Marsh who made a move from Galatasaray in 1995/96 for a club-record fee of £540,000 and set the bar so high it wouldn’t be surpassed in the next 25 years and counting.
But they did come fairly close to it a couple of years down the road when they bought Simon Coleman from Bolton Wanderers for £401,000. Gary Poole still sits in third place for his then-record breaking fee of £360,000 back in 1993/94 when he was brought in from Plymouth Argyle.
Their outgoing transfers, however, are both much more expensive and somewhat fresher. However, when it comes to the top spots and the club records, the business from the 90s still takes the cake. Stan Collymore was sold to Nottingham Forest for £2.7m in 1993/94 and he is still their most expensive sale to date.
Collymore is then closely followed by Freddie Eastwood who went for £2m in 2007/08 and in third place, we’ve got Nicky Bailey who was transferred to Charlton Athletic for £873,000 a year after that.
Despite their relatively low transfer fees both in outgoing and incoming business, there were some pretty big deals done at the club over the years. The departure of Collymore in 93/94 was definitely a huge thing for the club and they wouldn’t make so much profit from a single sale in the following 25 years.
A similar thing can be said for the purchase of Marsh in 95/96 that set the record yet to be eclipsed. And it’s quite likely he stays on the top in the immediate future as well. But the arrivals of legends like Steve Wilson and Eastwood were quite memorable and the latter’s departure in 07/08 is still their second biggest sale to date.
Of course, there are more, but these were the transfers that really ruffled a couple of feathers along the way…
