Needless to say, Stoke City are among the biggest spenders currently in the Championship. Of course, it is also true that they haven’t really splashed the cash in the last couple of years or so but looking at the receipts they’ve got, the Potters really do stand out from the crowd.
Their current record holder is actually Giannelli Imbula who moved to the club back in 2015/16 for a fee of £21.8m from Porto. And interestingly enough, that was also the season when Stoke City bought Xherdan Shaqiri from Inter for a reported sum of £15.3m, both eclipsing the previous biggest transfer that belonged to Peter Crouch who moved from Tottenham Hotspur for £10.1m in 2011/12.
Shaqiri’s price tag was then beaten by Kevin Wimmer’s transfer from Spurs for £17.4m in 2017/18 and those two along with Imbula round up the top three on the list of most expensive signings ever.
When it comes to big sales, Marko Arnautovic takes the cake with his £20m exit to West Ham United in 2017/18 and is then closely followed by Shaqiri’s departure to Liverpool in 2018/19 that made the Potters a sum of £13.2m, which is slightly less than they paid for him back in 2015/16.
Even in modern times, there have been some big names playing for Stoke City that haven’t really sprung out of their academy. Shaqiri was bought from Inter and he ended up becoming quite successful before his move to Liverpool a couple of years later. We should also not forget about Crouch whose stint as one of the Potters should also be mentioned.
There are, of course, more – Arnautovic, Imbulla, Wimmer – all of those players have ruffled a couple of feathers with their transfers and that’s without taking into account the players from the years gone by.
From Gordon Banks, Sir Stanley Matthews, who made a big return to the club in the early 60s, Alan Hudson and all the way to Ryan Shawcross, Peter Hoekstra and Mark Stein, there were some huge names donning their colours over the years that have been transferred to the club at some points in the past.
Stoke City may not really have the titles to show for but that doesn’t really take anything away from the legends that played for them throughout the years and this list is definitely a proof of that.
