Sunderland must appoint Sabri Lamouchi as their new head coach

Sunderland remain on the hunt for Lee Johnson’s successor at the Stadium of Light as Kristjaan Speakman eyes the club’s next permanent head coach.

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane is being heavily linked with a second stint in charge of the Black Cats, but it does not appear as if an announcement is imminent or close.

Forget Keane

Whilst the retired Irishman may be an exciting candidate due to his history with the club and his stature in the game after an illustrious playing career, Speakman must look to another man to lead the team going forward.

The Times recently reported that former Nottingham Forest coach Sabri Lamouchi is a contender to take over at the Stadium of Light, with some members of the board keen on the Frenchman. Although, it has also been stated that they are set for talks with Keane.

Should Sunderland appoint Lamouchi?

Speakman must seal a deal to bring the out-of-contract Lamouchi back to England as he could be a far better option than the current pundit. The 50-year-old has a recent track record of success, whereas the ex-Premier League enforcer has been out of management for some time.

Keane’s last job as a manager came with Ipswich – who he left in 2011. He averaged 1.37 points per game across 81 matches with the Tractor Boys, having managed 1.45 points per game in 100 outings for the Black Cats prior to his time in Suffolk.

This means that he has not had a role as a head coach or manager in over a decade, which could result in him needing time to adjust to leading a club on his own instead of being an assistant. That could stop him from being an instant success at the Stadium of Light, which is what they need as they chase promotion out of League One this term.

Who scored the club's first goal of 2021?

Lamouchi, on the other hand, managed Al-Duhail SC last year and enjoyed a fine season, winning 14 of his 20 league matches in charge. He averaged 2.2 points per game and led them to second place in the table, having finished seventh with Forest in the Championship the previous campaign – averaging 1.52 points per game.

This shows, firstly, that he has recent experience in management and has been successful in doing so, whilst, secondly, he has also shown that he can manage in the second tier of English football. Therefore, he could be the man to get them out of League One and then the right coach to fight for promotion again the following year.

Speakman must now work hard to strike an agreement with the 50-year-old as, on paper, he appears to be a far superior alternative to Keane.
