A big Sunderland claim has emerged on their pursuit of Leicester goalkeeper Daniel Iversen in the summer transfer window...

What's the talk?

Journalist Alan Nixon has confirmed that the Black Cats remain interested in a deal to sign the shot-stopper this season.

They are facing competition from one of their Championship rivals and the reporter has claimed that a decision is not expected in the immediate future.

He Tweeted: "West Brom keen. Sunderland keen. Depends if he goes on loan or is sold. Suspect this won’t be decided until later in window."

Supporters will be buzzing

Black Cats supporters will be buzzing with this claim as it shows that the club are still in the market for a goalkeeper after the signing of Alex Bass.

Kristjaan Speakman snapped the 24-year-old up from Portsmouth in July but he was unable to break into their team in League One last term. He made two appearances for Pompey in 2021/22 before heading out on loan to League Two, which does not suggest that he will be challenging to start in the Championship.

If he was not deemed good enough for the third tier last season then it seems unlikely that he will be able to push Anthony Patterson hard in the current campaign.

Therefore, bringing in a talented and quality option to compete with the young Englishman will delight fans as it will prevent Patterson from becoming complacent and feeling like he has the number one spot without any worry of losing it.

Iversen is a proven Championship performer who has shown that he has the quality to be a key player at this level, having spent time on loan at Preston North End from Leicester over the past 18 months or so.

In the 2021/22 campaign, he averaged a superb SofaScore rating of 6.93 in 46 outings. This came after he managed a score of 6.95 in 23 games in the second tier in 2020/21 - keeping 22 clean sheets across both spells combined.

These statistics prove that he knows what it takes to perform at this level and that is why he would be a fantastic signing to come in and challenge Patterson for his starting spot between the sticks.

Iversen can come in to demote Bass to third choice 'keeper and create real competition for the number one jersey, which is why fans will be buzzing with Nixon's claim that the club are keen on a deal for the Dane.
