Sunderland suffer setback in pursuit of Edouard Michut

An update has emerged regarding Sunderland‘s pursuit of Edouard Michut in the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Championship club’s swoop for the Paris Saint-Germain gem has collapsed after the French champions attempted to change the terms of the transfer.

He tweeted: “There’s an issue for Edouard Michut deal between PSG and Sunderland. It was agreed also with player already at the stadium last weekend — but PSG wanted to add a new last minute clause in the deal, not accepted. #PSG Michut is now returning to Paris to train with PSG.

The Chronicle’s James Hunter has doubled down on the news by tweeting that the Wearside club have suffered a setback in their move for the 19-year-old.

Speakman, work your magic

Black Cats sporting director Kristjaan Speakman should now work his magic and get back to the negotiating table with PSG to resurrect a deal after this big setback.

He must attempt to land a suitable deal for Sunderland by convincing the French giants to stick with the initial deal, without the change that they tried to make.

Sunderland initially agreed an arrangement which would have seen him arrive on loan with a €5m (£4.27m) option to sign him permanently next summer.

Speakman needs to work his magic in the final few days of the transfer window to get a deal over the line, as Michut has the potential to be an exciting addition to the Black Cats’ squad.

Signing him on loan with the chance of making it permanent in 2023 would also alleviate any major financial risk, as they could send him back to PSG if he fails to adapt to the Championship, which is why the move would be perfect for the Wearsiders from a structural standpoint.

Starting off easy... who was Sunderland's top scorer in 2021/22?

Sunderland-supporting journalist Josh Bunting claimed that the teenager would add a “real spark” to the team, while talent scout Jacek Kulig once described him as “highly technical and creative“. These comments suggest that Michut would be an exciting player for the fans to watch, as he is a forward-thinking midfielder who wants to make things happen on the ball.

The 19-year-old, who has played eight times for PSG’s first team, has been hailed as a press-resistant number eight who excels at progressing the ball up the pitch. This indicates that he could help the likes of Alex Pritchard, Ross Stewart, and Ellis Simms to thrive by finding them in positions in forward areas, which is why he could be an excellent signing for the club if they can bring him in.

Supporters would surely love to see a promising young talent who wants to progress the play and get on the front foot, as it could lead to exciting, attacking football.

It is now down to Speakman to bring this deal back to life before the 11pm deadline on Thursday, or else it will be a potentially big blow to Sunderland’s transfer plans.
