An update has emerged regarding Sunderland's interest in Danny Rose on deadline day of the summer transfer window.

What's the talk?

Journalist Aden-Jay Wood has revealed that the Black Cats are keen on a deal to snap up the left-back on a free transfer. He has been released by fellow Championship side Watford and is now available to sign a contract with another club this season.

Wood tweeted this afternoon: "Understand Sunderland are one of a number of clubs interested in signing former England international Danny Rose. Rose is a free agent after having his Watford contract terminated earlier today #Sunderland #sunderlandfc #DeadlineDay."

First blunder for Mowbray

Tony Mowbray only arrived on Wearside earlier this week but he could be in line for his first blunder in charge of the club if he allows this deal to go through.

The former Blackburn manager must urge Kristjaan Speakman against a swoop for the 32-year-old, as Rose may not be a valuable addition to the squad.

In January, Sunderland-supporting journalist Josh Bunting claimed that the England international had "gone downhill" at Watford as he lost his place in their team.

He joined the Hornets in the summer of 2021 and only played eight Premier League games for them, averaging a SofaScore rating of 6.69, after failing to make a single first-team appearance for Tottenham in 2020/21.

The dud did not feature in a single matchday squad for Watford in 2022 - in the top-flight or the Championship - before agreeing to leave on deadline day.

In December 2021, then-Watford manager Claudio Ranieri claimed that the left-back needed to improve his fitness significantly to work his way back into the team.

Rose has not played a single competitive minute since those comments were made, which indicates that he failed to prove to the Italian, or any of his subsequent managers, that he was fit enough to feature.

Couple his lack of game-time and fitness issues with his spell at Newcastle since he was last with the Black Cats, and it has the makings of a signing which seems destined to fail.

Mowbray must now avoid making his first blunder at the Stadium of Light by rejecting any chance of signing Rose and instead pushing to bring in young, hungry players with a recent track record of performing well.
