Sunderland set to appoint Phil Jevons as first-team coach

Sunderland are set to appoint Phil Jevons as a first-team coach at the Stadium of Light.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Alan Nixon, with The Sun journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that the Black Cats have made a move for the Everton U18 coach, who looks set to link up with Lee Johnson’s first-team backroom staff.

In his tweet, Nixon said: “Sunderland. Going to bring in coach Phil Jevons from Everton to work with [the club’s] first team. Been at U18 level at Goodison, now stepping up.”

Good news for Sunderland

With Lee Johnson, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman having overseen a rather impressive summer transfer window at the Stadium of Light, landing the arrivals of nine new first-team players – including the likes of Alex Pritchard, Corry Evans and Dennis Cirkin on permanent moves, and Callum Doyle, Niall Huggins and Nathan Broadhead on loan deals – there has been a clear shift in transfer strategy at the League One side – one which prioritises youth.

Indeed, with Speakman himself revealing that one of his objectives at the club was to dramatically bring the average age of the squad down – something which the sporting director has achieved this summer, with the first team now boasting a 24.8 average age compared to 28 last season – the addition of a coach who is experienced in the development of youth players in Jevons is yet another wise move by the club.

Who is the player?

One player who is likely to benefit most from the arrival of the Everton U18 coach is loanee centre-forward Broadhead, with the 23-year-old having been a part of the Toffees youth setup for the majority of his career.

Furthermore, aside from the positive impact the arrival of Jevons will have on the Sunderland players, the fact that the Mackems have addressed the need to provide further support to their younger talents in the first team is yet more evidence that the Black Cats are being run correctly by Johnson, Louis-Dreyfus and Speakman – something that has certainly not been the case in the club’s recent history.
