Swansea take on south Wales rivals Cardiff City at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday evening in the hope that they can complete a historic double over the Bluebirds and get their automatic promotion hopes back on track.
Steve Cooper’s side fell to a 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth in their last fixture, whilst their rivals have enjoyed a renaissance under Mick McCarthy and are now challenging for a playoff spot.
Jamal Lowe’s double secured a 2-0 win for Swansea in the reverse fixture and they can make history by winning the game on Saturday, as it would be the first time in their history that the Swans have beaten Cardiff home and away in the league in the same season.
For Cooper’s side, it is arguably a must-win fixture, otherwise they risk being cut adrift from the likes of Watford and Brentford for the second automatic promotion spot, with Norwich City looking unstoppable at the top.
Here’s how Football FanCast expects Cooper to line his team up on Saturday, with four changes from the side which started against Bournemouth…
Freddie Woodman keeps his place in goal despite conceding three in midweek, as the on-loan Newcastle United man has been first-choice all season and has been excellent for the majority of it.
There are two changes in central defence, as Marc Guehi makes his return from injury to start ahead of Joel Latibeaudiere, who was axed at half-time in the defeat against the Cherries, whilst Ben Cabango also comes back in, replacing Kyle Naughton.
Cooper rotates his left wing-backs once again, with Jake Bidwell coming in for Ryan Manning after the Irish defender’s poor performance in midweek.
Jay Fulton adds some bite in midfield, replacing Korey Smith, with the Scottish 26-year-old having comfortably averaged the most tackles per game for Swansea in the Championship this season.
Finally, Connor Hourihane supports Andre Ayew and Jamal Lowe in attack, with Cooper perhaps hoping that Lowe can rediscover his shooting boots against their south Wales rivals. Otherwise we may see Morgan Whittaker replace him after his impressive cameo in midweek.
