From The Vaults – City have 1999 to thank for glamorous new era

Pep Guardiola has won manager of the month, Gabriel Jesus is on fire – albeit currently confined to a mobility scooter – and City have one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Indeed, any Claudio Bravo-induced jitters from the tail-end of 2016 seem to have lifted and regardless of this season’s outcome; a showbiz manager and an endless pot of gold suggest that sooner or later Man City will realise their plans for world domination.

Of course, it hasn’t always been this way. It wasn’t too long ago that Stuart Pearce was hailed as the man to lead to City into the Premier League’s top 10 and not long before that when the blue half of Manchester were humbled 2-1 at home to Wycombe Wanderers in a Division 2 clash just days before United completed their famous treble against Bayern Munich.

In the first of a new weekly feature on Football FanCast, we bust open the vaults of football history and travel back to 1999: a time when Man City had just slipped into England’s third tier.

Watch the video below to see how a struggle to re-climb the footballing ladder culminated in the most exciting and important match in the club’s history…
