Back in the day, the Ballon d’Or was an open event that really showed the greatest players annually… but it has become a two-horse between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo the last eight years.
And while we are not arguing against Messi’s or Ronaldo’s incredible talents, it is definitely fair to say that in a few of those seasons there have been other players that could be more deserving of the triumph.
Let’s look back to 2010, when Inter Milan under Jose Mourinho managed to complete a treble-winning season, with Wesley Sneijder playing out of his skin in that remarkable campaign.
The Dutchman then led his country to the World Cup final, only losing to Spain in extra time.
Yet the award still went to Lionel Messi, which started the trend of every Ballon d’Or winner being either Messi or Ronaldo.
But, that’s not the only point that makes the Ballon d’Or rather uneventful.
