Tottenham Hotspur's academy have seen some fine talents come through to grace the pitch for the first-team over the years, ranging from Harry Kane to Oliver Skipp, and now there could be a new potential star in town.

Roshaun Mathurin, a left-footed winger capable of playing on both flanks, has recently bounced back from an ACL injury to retake his starting place in the U21 squad.

The teenager was originally signed from arch-rivals Chelsea from the age of 12 and has gone on to excel at Hotspur Way.

Mathurin scored 14 goals in 27 games for the U16s during the 2019/20 season and that form resulted in a call-up to the U18s, featuring three times that campaign. In the following term, he bagged seven times in 21 matches in the U18 Premier League, including a hat-trick against his former club.

Now for the U21s, the 18-year-old has started both their UEFA Youth League outings, played in the EFL Trophy and featured the full 90 in matches against Manchester City U21s and Liverpool U21s, so he's clearly respected by Wayne Burnett and his coaching staff.

Spurs do have to be careful, though, as not every player is capable of making the next step up and such enamoured praise at this early in their career can often do more harm than good.

Take Marcus Edwards for example, a player that former manager Mauricio Pochettino once likened to Lionel Messi.

He never made the cut, however, that was through no fault of his own as the club took the chance of cashing in on him - the 23-year-old has since broken through in Portugal, where he is a star for Sporting CP.

But Mathurin could be an exception to the rule, given his impressive comeback from such a serious injury. He could well emerge as a Gareth Bale-like prodigy in the coming years.

His speed and tenacity along the right flank certainly opens up the scope for such a comparison to come to fruition, having been described as a "speedy" and "technical" winger by journalist Chris Miller, as well as "creative" by youth coach Harry Brooks.

The tricky speedster could well follow in the footsteps of Bale, who emerged as one of the best left-sided talents to ever come through the academy, given the evidence above and clear path to the senior side.

AND in other news, Spurs have dream heir to Kane's throne in 18 y/o "diamond" with "incredible potential"...
