Undoubtedly one of Jose Mourinho's key performers when the Portuguese man was in charge of Chelsea, Frank Lampard's ability to get goals from midfield was second-to-none.

Under Mourinho's leadership, the current Chelsea boss racked up a remarkable 70 goals, and provided a further 60 assists in just 215 games across all competitions. It was no surprise that the Blues were so successful in terms of winning trophies during that period.

Now, Mourinho finds himself at Spurs, and in his hunt to find goals to help soften the blow of losing Harry Kane and Heung-mon Son to injuries, he is struggling big-time. The duo remain the only players to have reached double figures in terms of goals this season, with Dele Alli being the highest-scoring midfielder with nine.

When you don't have a striker to bag you goals, you often have to look towards your midfield players to stand up and be counted. Unfortunately for the Lilywhites this season, that just hasn't been the case. And it is exactly why Spurs' interest in RB Leipzig man Marcel Sabitzer makes so much sense.

According to Italian publication Calcio Mercato, Sabitzer is being coveted by both Spurs and their north London rivals Arsenal. And when looking at his stats this season especially, it is easy to see why.

Including the two goals he scored against Spurs themselves in the second leg of their Champions League clash, the Austria international has been in fine fettle in front of goal. He has managed 15 goals in 35 games across all competitions this season, whilst his best goal-scoring campaign to date was in the 2014/2015 season, when he netted an astonishing 27 times in 51 games.

His increased goal threat has been recognised by Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann, who has waxed lyrical about his midfielder's new-found ability. He said: "I have always said I want more goal threat from midfield. He clearly took that both literally and personally. He's a very important player for us."

And after his strike against Zenit, teammate and Leipzig captain Willi Orban, also spoke glowingly about Sabitzer's talent in this area. He exclaimed: "He has great shooting technique. I've no idea where he gets it from, but he's always got it ready to go. Today it was really important because it was the winning goal, and an unbelievably good one at that. I'm happy for him."

Whilst it is far too hyperbolic to suggest Sabitzer is anywhere near as good as someone as Lampard, there can be no questioning that the duo share a happy knack for scoring goals from deep in midfield. The latter was a key cog of the Chelsea machine for Mourinho, and now it could be the Leipzig man's turn at Spurs.

Meanwhile, Mourinho is absolutely right to be ruthless with this Spurs loanee.
