Amidst all the attention being focused on the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, it's easy to perhaps forget that Tottenham have also been without Moussa Sissoko for quite some time now.

The Frenchman injured the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee during Spurs' clash against Southampton on New Year's Day, with surgery ruling him out until April.

But in a promising update from Football.London's Tottenham correspondent, Alasdair Gold, the north Londoners could be seeing the midfielder very soon.

"He's back outside training now. Mourinho hopes he’ll be back from that knee injury later next month in full training and then available to play matches throughout April and May. Sissoko put up a really encouraging video of him doing ball work at Hotspur Way this week, twisting, turning, passing and moving quite quickly. You have to wonder if, like Hugo Lloris, he will be back a little earlier than Mourinho’s prediction."

Whilst Kane and Son are naturally more headline-grabbing players - what with them being goal-scorers - Sissoko's imminent return from injury is arguably just as important as the aforementioned duo.

The former Newcastle man is such a versatile player, and one of those individuals who managers can simply trust to deliver a solid performance wherever they put them - after all, this season alone has seen Sissoko feature in central midfield, holding midfield, right-midfield and even at right-back.

Before his injury setback, the £22.5m-rated ace was a virtual ever-present for both Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino, featuring in every single Premier League game bar one - and that was only down to suspension.

Having someone like Sissoko in the squad gives the current Spurs boss a great degree of flexibility, both in terms of his own line-up, and thinking about how to counter the opposition.

No clues whatsoever: Which seasons do these iconic Spurs images belong to?

In games where Mourinho feels he needs extra defensive protection for Serge Aurier, the Frenchman can fill in ahead of him on the right-hand side thanks to his 1.1 tackles per game in the league.

On the other hand, in matches where he feels Spurs can dominate, using the 30-year-old powerhouse in a more central position can encourage those lung-busting runs - he averages an impressive 1.6 dribbles per game in the top-flight this season.

So whilst Kane and Son's potential returns from their respective injuries will be a massive boost for Mourinho, Gold's update on Sissoko is a similarly huge triumph for the Spurs manager too.

Meanwhile, Tottenham must exploit this £31.5m-rated ace as a play-maker.
