It was no secret that back in the January transfer window, Tottenham were on the hunt for a centre-forward to ease their concerns in that department.

After all, Harry Kane had been ruled out for the best part of a few months, and the club did not have a single like-for-like replacement for their talisman.

Numerous names were bandied about including Willian Jose from Real Sociedad, but in the end, the final few days of the window saw Chelsea's Olivier Giroud being linked.

Reports suggested that the Frenchman was even keen on making the switch across London, but a move failed to materialise by the end of the deadline, with Chelsea unable to bring in a striker of their own.

And since then, the £8.1m-rated ace has established himself as a key part of Frank Lampard's side, playing in four successive Premier League games, and starting the clash against Bayern Munich in the Champions League - quite the change for someone who barely even made it into the match-day squads on some occasions this season.

Whilst his impressive performances have worked out well for the Blues, they have essentially just rubbed salt into the wound for Spurs.

Olivier Giroud's Premier League and Champions League

The 33-year-old has scored twice, and has been a right battering ram up front for Chelsea - the kind of centre-forward Mourinho would dearly have loved to lead the line at Spurs.

One of Giroud's strikes of course even came against the north Londoners themselves, when he was on target in a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge back on February 22. That moment would have been particularly galling for the likes of Mourinho and Daniel Levy.

Aside from his goals though, the former Arsenal man has been a real handful with his overall play, winning an astonishing 22 aerial duels in just five Premier League and Champions League games combined - he won seven alone against Spurs.

His 11 shots and three key passes prove just how good effective and influential he has been all-round, and is putting in the kind of performances that will have left Mourinho wondering 'what if'.

Meanwhile, Spurs must avoid a swoop for this Premier League man.
