Tottenham Hotspur should have brought a new goalkeeper in during the January transfer window to replace Hugo Lloris, Spurs pundit John Wenham has claimed.

What's the word?

The World Cup winner has been a good servant for Spurs since his arrival in 2012, but has come in for heavy criticism for errors in recent games, including a shocker in their North London derby defeat last month.

Spurs elected not to replace the 36-year-old in the January window, and this decision is perhaps a gamble considering his current form, as well as the lack of other options.

Speaking to Football Insider, Wenham slammed the decision not to act in the market.

“The form and decline of Hugo Loris could not go on and a new goalkeeper had to be signed within this window, that didn’t happen,” he stated.

“We are now in a situation where Lloris is a legend of football, but the decline is so stark that it is a risk to have him carry on in goal.

“The alternative is Fraser Forster who is not good enough to be a starter for us. We have big problems in the goalkeeping department.“

Replacement needed in the summer

Given the difficulty of signing players in the January window, as you would imagine clubs will typically be less willing to let their No 1 leave, Spurs have to recruit a first-choice goalkeeper as a priority in the summer.

David Raya has been linked, and the Brentford goalkeeper could provide a huge upgrade on Lloris.

Raya ranks in the top 12% of goalkeepers for save percentage, compared to Lloris in the 55th percentile as per FBref, and given that Lloris also ranks in the bottom 1% for goal kick length, his distribution is arguably sub-par compared to his peers.

Whilst he has delivered a lot over the years, this should definitely be his final season as the Spurs No 1.
