Jose Mourinho has admitted that Steven Bergwijn is likely to miss the rest of the season due to an ankle injury, as reported by BBC Sport.

The Dutchman may have been able to complete the full 90 minutes during the 1-1 draw against Burnley, but he has suffered from a "significant sprain" to his left ankle and faces an "extended period of rehabilitation".

This will come as an especially large blow considering he was signed from PSV Eindhoven for £27m in January, making an encouraging start with two goals in his first five games.

He now joins the list of key men who are missing for Spurs, which already includes Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

However, the 22-year-old has remained defiantly positive following the news, as he showed on his personal Instagram account.

The insistence is that he will be "soon back on top", whether that means he can play a part towards the back end of the current campaign or help Spurs at the beginning of 2020/21.
