Spurs dealt Rodrigo Bentancur blow

Tottenham Hotspur could be without Rodrigo Bentancur for their Premier League clash with West Ham United this evening.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick, who claims that the Uruguyan midfielder will be assessed for a concussion after picking up a head injury during the win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

He could miss the next six days, so would be ineligible to face the Hammers and Fulham at the weekend.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte will also be without Lucas Moura and Bryan Gil for a second successive game.

Gutting blow

Betancur’s likely absence, given the issue only arose a few days ago, would be gutting news for Conte, who has started the former Juventus star in every game this campaign.

The 25-year-old also played in all but one league game after his arrival in January and has clearly emerged as one of Spurs’ standout players under the Italian.

His form for the club hasn’t gone unnoticed, BBC Match of the Day 2 pundit Danny Murphy waxed lyrical about the box-to-box maestro. He said:

“This guy’s elegant, he’s classy. He makes the game look easy and he plays the ball forward more often than not, and quickly. And that’s what you want. That’s really what you need.”

That came after a game against tonight’s opponents, where Bentancur was said to have caused “West Ham a real problem.”

Meanwhile, his teammate Cristian Romero once dubbed him an “animal” and in another interview with The Athletic, he claimed:

“Bentancur I was aware of from Italy, I always thought he was the kind of player who could cut it in the Premier League. What’s surprised me is the level at which he’s doing really, really well. How important he’s become for us so quickly.”

Indeed, on that evidence alone, Bentancur is clearly an important member of the starting XI, so his absence this evening would certainly be frustrating for Conte and the team.

Squad rotation was always going to happen but that would’ve been on the Italian’s terms, rather than being forced into a change as the £20m man, who South American football expert Tom Robinson dubbed a “Rolls-Royce midfielder”, is going to be a big, big miss against the likes of Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek tonight.
