Tottenham Hotspur's season is dead in the water after they crashed out of the Champions League earlier this week, so it is time for Jose Mourinho to look ahead in order to stamp his own mark on this squad.

The north Londoners only have the Premier League to compete for, and even then, they have it all to do with Spurs sitting seven points adrift from local rivals Chelsa in fourth place.

According to the Daily Mail, Mourinho is eyeing a swoop for AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the hope that he can genuinely rival Hugo Lloris for the number one spot.

The Frenchman's role is under scrutiny after a cataclysm of errors contributed to their downfall against RB Leipzig on Tuesday.

But would the move be a good one to make?

Our writers have given their verdict...

Matt Dawson

"I'm a big fan of Aaron Ramsdale, but this would be a move too soon both in terms of his own development and what Spurs need. The 21-year-old may have made the third-most saves in the entire division, but he is a stopper still learning his trade. After all, he's come via League 2 and League 1 in the previous few seasons so simply playing in the Premier League for Bournemouth is a meteoric rise. Tottenham need an instant fix, someone who can come in and replace the error-stricken Hugo Lloris.

"Ramsdale may have a bright future in the game, but that would surely be hindered should he join Spurs. They already have two 'keepers in their armoury, and there's no guarantee he'd even be a regular starter. I like the look of Daniel Levy's thinking, but this simply wouldn't fit in with Jose Mourinho's values. Time and time again he's failed to pick young up, and coming players - Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku come to mind, so why would he select a young stopper? They must avoid this one for the time being."

Danny Lewis

"Aaron Ramsdale would be an astute addition for Spurs. With Hugo Lloris adding another pair of mistakes to his long list in Leipzig, it is pretty clear that they need a new stopper between the sticks. They could do a lot worse than signing a 21-year-old who has been missed just one Premier League this season. AFC Bournemouth may be struggling this term, but he has been effective in his role, as is embodied by the loss at Anfield, when the England youth international made four saves against Liverpool. Having someone who can come in to make an immediate impact, as well as developing over the years, is an indication of a very good signing."

Billy Meyers

"At any other time, a signing of Aaron Ramsdale's ilk would be a shrewd move for Tottenham.

"He has impressed for Bournemouth this season, has plenty of time on his side at 21 years of age and is also British, which would see him fit in as a homegrown player at Spurs.

"However, in this instance, this is one that Mourinho should avoid through no fault of Ramsdale's. In Hugo Lloris and Paulo Gazzaniga, the north Londoners have two decent options, but neither are outstanding nor are they completely solid or unlikely to make errors.

"In that respect, Spurs need a leading figure in that role who is undoubtedly world-class - not in the form of Alisson or Jan Oblak, as that would presumably cost them an eye-watering amount, although Tottenham can't afford to wait for players to develop anymore.

"Mourinho needs ready-made stars to kickstart his Tottenham career and make his side worthy challengers again, which won't happen if Ramsdale arrives despite all the aforementioned positives surrounding him as a player - now is not the time for a project player, and Mourinho also risks angering the fanbase with this move."

Lewis Blain

"There will be a lot of doubts surrounding this move, but I firmly believe Spurs need to take a punt on a young English goalkeeper. The likes of Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope have proven their worth in the Premier League, albeit for lesser teams - no disrespect to Burnley or Bournemouth, but it is the truth.

"Lloris has been riddled with mistakes and injuries for quite some time, so why not think to the future with the league's third-ranked save magician. The Frenchman was one of Mauricio Pochettino's tried and tested regulars, but it is time for Mourinho to stamp his own mark down on the north London outfit."
