Clinton Morrison has urged Tanguy Ndombele to “do more” at Tottenham Hotspur, per Sky Sports’ The Debate (March 11th, 47:10).

What’s the word?

Ndombele is the club’s record signing, arriving in the summer for a fee of £53.8m that could rise to £62.8m.

He has struggled somewhat, however, with manager Jose Mourinho choosing to criticise him publicly after the club’s 1-1 draw with Burnley at the weekend.

He said: “"I know the Premier League is difficult, and some players take a long time to adapt to a different league.

“But a player with his potential has to give us more than he is giving us, especially when you see how Lucas (Moura), (Giovani) Lo Celso and those players are playing. I was expecting more in the first half from him.”

No clues whatsoever: Which seasons do these iconic Spurs images belong to?

The France international has made a total of 19 Premier League appearances this season but has completed the 90 minutes just three times, with two coming in the opening two games of the season.

And Morrison feels he should be playing better than he currently is.

He said: “The one player who should do more is Ndombele.

“I've watched a lot of him at Lyon, I think he's a superb player. Technically really good, but he needs to get his fitness up.

“But instead of coming out and criticising him in public, keep that in house.”

He added: “He's a tremendous talent, I do like him.”

Improvement necessary

Ndombele hasn’t delivered.

Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher savaged Ndombele on Monday, insisting that his performance against Burnley was a “disgrace” and that Mourinho’s criticism of him was thoroughly justified.

And, really, he’s not wrong.

He’s an incredibly expensive player and, per Spotrac, is earning £200,000-per-week. Over the course of a six-year deal, that equates to an investment of £62.4m provided he stays for the duration of his contract. Add that to a fee of £62.8m, provided all bonuses are activated, and one has an overall cost of £125.2m.

Ndombele’s performances, at this stage of the season, simply haven’t been good enough but Morrison is right that he possesses the required talent to make a real impact.

It’s down to him to ensure he realises it and isn’t considered an expensive flop.
