Spurs: Conte must ditch Sanchez for Liverpool clash

Tottenham Hotspur are back in action today as they welcome Liverpool to north London in what will be a huge Premier League clash at the top end of the table.

Antonio Conte’s side can distance themselves from last season’s runners-up with a victory. Despite inconsistent and unconvincing displays, the Lilywhites find themselves third in the league standings, some ten points clear of the ninth-placed Reds.

The Italian and the squad come into kick-off on a high, having snatched a last-gasp victory over Marseille to win their Champions League group in midweek, though this came at a cost as Heung-min Son picked up a gutting injury that will see him miss Spurs’ remaining games before the World Cup break.

With central defensive colossus Cristian Romero also on the treatment table, it leaves Conte with plenty to ponder before his side takes on Jurgen Klopp and co, who have looked a lot better in recent outings.

Should Sanchez start vs Liverpool?

Forget Emerson Royal

Liverpool’s mini-resurgence has largely been down to their attack, where Mo Salah and summer signing Darwin Nunez have struck up a frightening partnership and both could do Tottenham some serious damage if the 53-year-old tactician isn’t careful.

All three of the Uruguayan’s top-flight goals have come against London sides, whilst he has been clocked as the fastest centre-forward (36.53 km/h) in the Premier League so far, with only Antony Gordon (36.61 km/h) of Everton registering a quicker speed this term.

Nunez (1.01) is also exceeding Harry Kane (0.77) for expected goals per 90 (xG90), via Understat, so whilst the England skipper has found the net a whopping ten times from his 13 outings, it’s clear that the former Benfica star has been a little unlucky in front of the sticks.

It means Conte cannot risk some of his defensive liabilities – right wing-back Emerson Royal springs to mind but with Klopp opting for two central forwards, he could be spared an easier game.

Instead, in Romero’s absence, the Spurs boss must avoid unleashing Davinson Sanchez, having started him in their five-goal thriller against newly-promoted AFC Bournemouth last weekend.

The north Londoners looked destined for a frustrating result on the south coast before Rodrigo Bentancur popped up with an injury-time winner.

The Colombian dud, who cost Spurs a one-time club-record £42m, lasted just an hour before he was hooked for Eric Dier. If he struggled against Kieffer Moore – with all due respect – then he could have a torrid afternoon against the aforementioned threat of Nunez and Salah.

Sanchez is “an accident waiting to happen” in the eyes of former Lilywhites midfielder and talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara, who made such a claim after Spurs’ 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United a week before their trip to Dean Court.

At what age did Kane make his debut for Tottenham?

Of course, Conte is light on centre-back options but simply putting in the £65k-per-week liability for the sake of it is surely not a risk worth taking, given the firepower that the Reds possess.

As such, the stern Italian must be bold in his decision-making and ensure that the struggling Sanchez has no part to play from the off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium later today.
