Antonio Conte still without one Spurs star for Sporting CP clash

Tottenham Hotspur have a near fully fit squad available for tonight’s Champions League clash with Sporting CP, though manager Antonio Conte will still be without one name…

What’s the latest?

Brazilian winger Lucas Moura is still absent through injury with a tendon issue that he picked up after Spurs’ win over Wolverhampton Wanderers nearly a month ago.

“Lucas is not available,” the Italian head coach revealed pre-game (via the club’s official website).

“His recovery is going well, but we will have to wait until after international break, and we will try to exploit that two weeks to bring him back to the best peak of form, then we will have him available for the squad.”

He isn’t likely to be back until the north London derby on October 1st.

Does Moura have a part to play this season?

YES!

YES!

NO!

NO!

Gutting setback

This will be a gutting blow to the 53-year-old as he could probably do with Moura being available due to the sheer volume of matches on the horizon.

Today’s outing was due to be their fifth of seven in a three-week window and that will not improve after the international break as UEFA’s midweek competitions will resume before the World Cup gets underway in Qatar.

The Lilywhites will play as many as ten games between their trip to Arsenal and the return leg against Marseille on November 1st.

That means rotation and squad depth will be imperative to Spurs’ chances of remaining competitive across all competitions, where they currently remain unbeaten since the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

Can you remember these Spurs kits? We'll start with an easy one, which season is this famous strip from?

Moura, who is capable of playing on both flanks, as a wing-back and centrally, is a big miss due to his versatility as you can effectively plug and play him in any role, so whether it’s Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski or Emerson Royal that needs a rest, the former Paris Saint-Germain gem can step in easily.

Once described as a “nightmare” to train against by teammate Eric Dier, it’s clear that the 30-year-old – who cost £25m in January 2018 – can still do a job at the elite level.

His quality, experience and versatility would have been a big boost for Conte if he were available but unfortunately he isn’t, so that deals the manager in the dugout a frustrating blow indeed.

AND in other news, Spurs star has a “real chance” of a January departure
