Former Tottenham defender Graham Roberts has told Football FanCast that he would rather have Dele Alli than the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso.
Alli will be hoping to make his way back into the team under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo after starting just seven Premier League fixtures last season.
The 25-year-old attacking midfielder was ostracised by Jose Mourinho before his sacking but could now be handed a lifeline following that change in the dugout.
“You look at Dele Alli’s record,” the Tottenham legend said. “If he can get back to that sort of player, you know, 50 or 60 goals in five seasons, that’s 10 goals a season for a midfield player.
“Ndombele and Lo Celso have scored two goals in two seasons. I think they’re great players, but I’d rather have Dele Alli in my side, who scores goals.”
Last season was no doubt a disappointing one for Alli. However, he is still just 25 and has time to recover and rediscover his best form again.
So perhaps Nuno should not be too quick to discard the England international. It is definitely one subplot at Tottenham to keep an eye on.
