Tottenham Hotspur's right wing-back Djed Spence is believed to have chosen Rennes as his loan move after hearing there was an opportunity for him to play regular first-team football.

What's the latest?

It was announced on deadline day that the 22-year-old would be playing his football elsewhere for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.

And his landing spot may have surprised some with Spence rejecting offers from some big names across Europe to join the Ligue 1 side, Rennes.

However, it appears there was some logic behind the move with Spurs getting wind that Rennes' Hamari Traore had picked up an injury which was going to see him sidelined for a number of weeks.

Indeed, speaking on his latest YouTube video, journalist Alasdair Gold has suggested the north London club and Spence got wind of the potential injury issue and decided this could be an opportunity for him to play regular football:

"It's quite a clever move. The reason I say that is because it seems like he and his camp, maybe Spurs as well, they were armed with the knowledge that the Rennes captain, Hamari Traore, was having an MRI on an injury. And it showed that he's going to be out for a while.

"And it could be anything up to two months, one person told me - potentially longer - and I think his backup is also out. I can't remember his name, but I think he's also out for three months. So it's a very clever move."

Rocky start at Spurs

It really has been a few months to forget for Spence with the youngster joining Tottenham in the summer only to play 41 minutes of football across all competitions.

And in the Premier League, manager, Antonio Conte, has only awarded the right wing-back with three minutes of football across four cameo displays.

The Italian set his stall out from the minute Spence walked through the doors at Hotspur Way with Conte suggesting the player was someone the club wanted to sign:

"Spence is an investment of the club. The club wanted to do it. I said ‘OK, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us’. The club decided to buy him,” he said back in July.

The 22-year-old joined Spurs during their pre-season trip to South Korea, so perhaps that gave him a slight disadvantage in Conte's eyes, however, the Italian is yet to provide him with a start in any major competition.

So it does seem as if a loan move away is the best option for Spence but Rennes could have proven a concern for some given Joe Rodon also joined them on loan back in the summer and the Welshman has struggled recently for game time.

However, with their starting right-back set for a spell on the sidelines, it would seem as if there is a clear pathway for Spence to pick up some regular action.

And who knows what situation he will return to at Spurs with the future of Antonio Conte in doubt, he may come back to a manager who is willing to offer him an opportunity.
