Spurs: Ben Davies ran the show vs Leeds

Tottenham Hotspur returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, with Antonio Conte’s side securing yet another comeback victory to defeat Leeds United 4-3.

However, after yet another slow start, things could have panned out very differently for Spurs, with Crysencio Summerville giving the visitors a first-half lead, before Rodrigo restored the Whites’ advantage shortly before the break after Harry Kane’s 25th-minute equaliser.

Ben Davies’ brilliant drive from the edge of the box then levelled the scores once more, only for Rodrigo to seal what looked to be a winner for Leeds with just 14 minutes left to play – with the Spaniard finishing cooly beyond Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham were not done there, however, with Dejan Kulusevski’s cross eventually finding Rodrigo Bentancur on the edge of the box, with the Uruguayan driving home an equaliser with 81 minutes on the clock, before the duo combined once again two minutes later, with the Swede driving into the Whites’ area and squaring for the 25-year-old, who tapped home the winner.

Although, despite the impact of both Kulusevski and Bentancur, it was arguably the performance of Davies that will have most pleased Conte on Saturday afternoon, as the defender was both imperious at the back and deadly going forwards against Leeds.

Indeed, over his 90 minutes on the pitch, the £26.5m-rated talent was excellent in a defensive capacity, making three interceptions and two tackles, as well as winning a total of five duels.

The £80k-per-week Welshman also caught the eye in possession, completing 60 of his 67 attempted passes – a success rate of 90% – finding his man with three of his six attempted long balls and completing one of his three attempted dribbles, in addition to creating one big chance and getting himself on the scoresheet.

These returns saw the 29-year-old earn an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.4 – ranking him as Conte’s third-best player on the day – while Alasdair Gold awarded the versatile centre-back a nine in his own player ratings, as well as stating of the defender’s display in a post on Twitter:

At what age did Kane make his debut for Tottenham?

“With all the talk of players being worried about injuries ahead of the World Cup, Ben Davies has thrown himself at everything for Spurs in this opening half hour. He’s giving everything in every challenge.”

Indeed, it would appear the last thing on the “tireless” Davies’ mind on Saturday afternoon was the upcoming World Cup, with his display not only proving the Wales international’s commitment to the Spurs cause, but also seeing him head to Qatar in red-hot form – as the defender very much ran the show for Tottenham against Leeds.
