Spurs: Antonio Conte must unleash Bryan Gil vs Man United

Tottenham Hotspur head into this evening’s Premier League meeting with Manchester United in an improved run of form, as, after picking up just one win over four matches at the end of September and the start of October, Antonio Conte’s side now find themselves on a run of three consecutive victories in all competitions.

However, with Erik ten Hag’s side also currently on an impressive run of form – having lost just once over their last six fixtures – United will undoubtedly provide Spurs with a stern test at Old Trafford – especially considering the fact that both Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski look as if they will be unavailable for selection due to injury.

As such, should Conte wish to continue deploying his preferred 3-4-3 formation this evening, the 53-year-old will likely have to call upon one of Lucas Moura or Bryan Gil for the trip to Manchester – the latter of whom is yet to be used by the Italian in the top flight in the 2022/23 campaign.

However, in recent comments cited by, the former Inter Milan, Juventus and Chelsea manager did suggest that he is considering handing the Spain U21 international his first league outing against United:

“Gil can be a possibility… I have another training session to make the best decision. You know we like to play with a 3-4-3 with the three strikers and if we can’t change, I prefer to continue to play with the 3-4-3 otherwise we find a solution. I think we have the possibility to continue to play with the 3-4-3.

“Yes [I would like to stick with 3-4-3], because in my idea we’ve worked a lot with this system. Lucas Moura is recovering from his injury, Gil is making progress and then I have Ivan Perisic who can play like a striker.”

And, considering just how much potential the £26m-rated talent quite clearly possesses, it would indeed appear wise for Conte to finally hand the 21-year-old an opportunity to impress, as Gil has already proven he has what it takes to be a game-changer in one of Europe’s big five leagues.

Indeed, over his 29 LaLiga appearances in his final campaign with Sevilla back in 2020/21, the £80k-per-week sensation was in exceptional form, scoring four goals, registering three assists and creating four big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 1.4 shots, making 1.8 key passes and completing 2.3 dribbles per game.

These returns saw the player who Jordan Campbell dubbed “unbelievable” and claimed can play “like Messi” average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.04, ranking him as his club’s fifth-best performer in the top flight of Spanish football that season.

At what age did Kane make his debut for Tottenham?

As such, while United away is undoubtedly something of a baptism of fire for a youngster who is yet to play a Premier League fixture this season, Conte’s risk on the Spaniard could well bring high reward – as Gil could well explode against Ten Hag’s side.
