Spurs: Fabio Paratici hit the jackpot on Cristian Romero

Following Fabio Paratici’s appointment as the new Tottenham Hotspur sporting director back in July of 2021, the north London side have enjoyed a great deal of success in the transfer market.

Indeed, over the course of his first season with the Premier League side, the Italian sealed deals for the likes of centre-back Cristian Romero, central midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur and right-winger Dejan Kulusevski – all three of whom have already established themselves as regular starters within Antonio Conte’s first team squad.

This summer, the 50-year-old would go on to land yet more impressive additions for Spurs, with the likes of Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Djed Spence, Destiny Udogie, Clement Lenglet and Richarlison all becoming Tottenham players, while the sporting director also converted Romero’s initial loan deal into a £42.5m permanent move back in August.

And, considering just how impressive the former Atalanta defender has been thus far in his Spurs career, it would very much appear as if Paratici hit the jackpot when negotiating a fee for the 24-year-old for as little as he did.

Indeed, over his 22 Premier League appearances last season, the £61.2m-rated talent was in remarkable defensive form, helping his side keep five clean sheets, as well as making an average of 2.8 tackles, 1.5 interceptions, 3.3 clearances and winning 5.9 duels – at a success rate of 62% – per game.

The Argentina international also impressed in possession of the ball, enjoying an average of 73.8 touches, in addition to completing 51.9 passes – at a success rate of 87% – 2.6 long balls, 0.3 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per fixture – demonstrating his clear ball-playing ability from the back.

These returns saw the £165k-per-week defender average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.15 last time out, not only ranking him as Conte’s sixth-best performer in the league but also as the joint 31st-best player in the English top flight as a whole – a quite extraordinary feat for his debut campaign in the country.

How well do you know Spurs manager Antonio Conte? Question 1. During his playing days, in which position did Conte typically operate?

The player who Evening Standard journalist Dan Kilpatrick dubbed “outstanding” has also impressed over his four league fixtures in the current campaign, once again averaging an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.08 – ranking him as Spurs’ eighth-best performer in the league so far this season.

As such, considering his remarkable returns in north London, in addition to the fact that he currently has a market valuation that is 44% greater than the £42.5m fee Paratici paid Atalanta for his services less than a month ago, it is clear to see that the Italian hit the jackpot on Romero – as the 24-year-old will undoubtedly be a huge player for Spurs for many a year to come, not to mention an extremely valuable and in-demand asset.
