An update has emerged on Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Clement Lenglet and his fitness ahead of the clash with Chelsea.

What's the talk?

Spurs journalist Charlie Eccleshare has confirmed that the French defender will not be available for selection against the Blues on Sunday.

He made his debut for the club - off the bench - in the commanding 4-1 win over Southampton last weekend in the Premier League and will now be absent for this match.

Eccleshare tweeted:

"#THFC team news: Lenglet has "a little problem" with his adductor brought on by fatigue and will miss the Chelsea game as a precaution. Skipp needs a couple of weeks before he’s available. Otherwise everyone available for Chelsea game."

Frustration for Lenglet

This comes as a blow to Antonio Conte's squad and may leave the Barcelona loanee feeling frustrated as it is far from the ideal start to his career at the club.

The £97k-per-week gem only played 27 times in all competitions last season - starting just seven league matches -  and may have moved to Tottenham in the hope of getting more game time.

Seven starts in La Liga for a player at the age of 27 is not what he would have wanted at this point in his career, as he wasted time being a substitute when he could have been elsewhere playing matches.

He is not a young player looking to gain experience or a veteran on the hunt for one last payday. The gem should be in his prime years and that is why being on the bench on a regular basis would be frustrating for him as it does not benefit him.

What this injury blow means is that his progress to making himself a starter for Spurs has been stunted. His cameo against the Saints offered a glimpse of what he is capable of as he won 100% (1/1) of his aerial battles and completed all six of his attempted passes in eight minutes.

He will now have to recover from this injury before thinking about working his way into the team. Instead of being given another chance to impress off the bench, he will be watching on from the stands or in the treatment room because of his problem.

Therefore, he will be frustrated as it is a setback right at the start of his time in England and will leave him with an uphill battle to regain his fitness and then oust one of the current starters in the team.
