While Fabio Paratici has pulled off some exciting deals in the transfer market at Tottenham since his arrival - the likes of Cristian Romero and Dejan Kulusevski certainly spring to mind - it hasn't all been a massive success for the Italian.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment for Paratici has been the decision to sign Emerson Royal, when it actually seemed like Spurs were close to clinching a deal for Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Given that Arsenal eventually sealed the Japanese defender's signature for a mere £16m, and Spurs signed Emerson for £25.8m from Barcelona during Nuno Espirito Santo's brief reign as manager, it's been no surprise that the two have been intrinsically linked to each other this season in the Premier League.

However, while Tomiyasu has settled into life in English football with a bit more ease, Spurs' new arrival has found the going tough - so much so that Antonio Conte has recently turned to Matt Doherty as his first-choice right wing-back.

When you look at the comparison graphic below, it's Arsenal's full-back who comes out on top in some of the key categories.

Mitchell Dijks, Tomiyasu's former teammate at Bologna, dubbed him "very strong" and a "true Japanese warrior" at a press conference (via Tuttosport). Also, while speaking about the defender’s potential, former Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni said: “He is a complete player and Bologna got a real bargain with Tomiyasu. He’s a good player and was compared to Maya Yoshida, who has been playing in Europe for a decade. He’s got the quality to be a real star.”

Meanwhile, Emerson has come in for some heavy criticism, with his performances for the north Londoners this season seeing him slammed as "terrible" and "horrendous" by the likes of Noel Whelan and Jonathan Woodgate.

Indeed, with reports even linking the Brazilian with a potential move away after just one season in N17, here on FFC, we have called on Conte to just cut Spurs' losses on the right-back and move forward.

The £25m-rated Tomiyasu has clearly been the better signing out of the two, and it's a summer decision for which Spurs are still dearly paying.
