Spurs: Romano drops Gollini update

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on their first signing of the summer…

What’s the word?

According to renowned Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Spurs target Pierluigi Gollini will fly into England to complete his move to the club, although they will have to wait on a potential swoop for his Atalanta teammate Cristian Romero.

Writing on Twitter, the journalist said: “Tottenham. Gollini will fly to London today, done deal. Talks ongoing with Atalanta for Cristian Romero – the player hasn’t turned down any proposal but still no agreement between clubs. Price tag around €55m. Davinson Sanchez is not included in the deal as of today.”

Should Lloris still be Spurs' #1 next season?

No way!

No way!

Reason to be excited

Whilst this update is only the arrival of a goalkeeper, the Spurs faithful have every right to be rather excited as they should be with any new addition.

The 26-year-old will provide valuable competition to veteran shot-stopper Hugo Lloris, who in recent seasons has come under fire from the fanbase and the media for his inconsistent performances.

For example, after defeat to Everton in the FA Cup last season, the France World Cup winner was dubbed the true “weak link” of this current squad and also described as having “lettuce wrists” by Jason Cundy and Trevor Sinclair on talkSPORT.

Fans laid into him back in February for a particularly poor display against eventual champions Manchester City – as relayed by This is Futbol, the 34-year-old was lambasted as “criminal”, whilst others urged the club to get rid and even strip him of the captaincy.

Gollini will now push him to contend back at his very best. The £18m-rated Italy international started 32 times for the Serie A club last season and, on their way to finishing third ahead of Juventus, the 6 foot 4 beast recorded 13 clean sheets and only conceded 32 goals.

Okay, we'll start with an easy one... How much did Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg cost last summer?

By comparison, with Lloris between the sticks, Spurs recorded the worst defensive record of the traditional ‘big six’ in the top-flight.

That is exactly why the Tottenham faithful must be buzzing with this arrival. Even if he doesn’t right away or at all, Gollini will be pushing the club captain to elevate his game.

It’s a much-needed addition.
