An update has emerged on Tottenham Hotspur and their interest in Memphis Depay in the summer transfer window...

What's the talk?

According to Spanish outlet Super Deporte, Spurs are one of the teams plotting a swoop to sign the Netherlands international as Fabio Paratici looks to improve the squad ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

The report claims that Roma, Juventus and Ajax are also keen on a deal for the gem and are set to rival the club to his signature.

It is stated that Barcelona want a fee in the region of €20m (£17m) for the attacker, although the player himself is said to be unhappy with this valuation.

Massive Moura upgrade

After signing Richarlison to replace Steven Bergwijn earlier this month, Tottenham can now replace another one of their misfiring forwards by snapping up a deal for Depay.

Lucas Moura struggled badly in front of goal in the Premier League last season and failed to show that he is a player Antonio Conte can rely upon to score goals.

In 34 outings in the English top-flight last term, the Brazilian found the back of the net just twice. This came after he managed two strikes in 30 games in 2020/21 and four goals over 35 appearances the season before that.

He did provide 14 assists in that time but 22 goal contributions in 99 Premier League games across three campaigns is nothing to write home about.

Depay, meanwhile, produced 12 goals and two assists in 28 La Liga matches last season. In his last two years at Lyon, prior to 2021/22, he scored 29 goals and set up a further 14 in 50 games, which means that he has racked up 57 goal contributions in his last 78 league outings.

Reporter Deji Faremi once dubbed him a "magician" and his sublime statistics suggest that it was an apt comment, as he has the ability to conjure up goals and assists on a regular basis.

The Netherlands international has proven himself to be a reliable goalscorer and creator at the top level in recent seasons and that is why he would be a huge upgrade on Moura, who has not been consistent enough in the final third for Spurs.

Therefore, Paratici can improve Conte's options at the top end of the pitch by signing Depay to take the former PSG man's minutes in the team. The Brazilian can then either be moved on before the end of the window or used as a back-up option.
