Tottenham must ruthlessly cut their losses on Emerson Royal amid a recent transfer update on the full-back’s future at the club.
According to Spanish publication Marca, both Atletico Madrid and Inter are interested in signing the Brazilian in the summer, and it’s news which had Spurs insider John Wenham suggesting that it would be best for him to leave.
He said: “Personally, I would let him go. It’s all well and good to say he needs time to settle but we need instant improvements to our full-backs. We don’t have time to waste on players who are getting acclimatised to the Premier League.
“It is a huge detriment to our team that our full-backs currently don’t offer us much. If there was an opportunity to break even on Royal and just make that money back or even something like £5million less than what we paid, I would take it. I would be perfectly happy, and expect, for him to be gone in the first days of the window.”
With Emerson struggling badly since his move to Spurs last summer – he has been dubbed a “liability” by some fans following his performances – Conte must make the ruthless call of getting rid of him just a year after his arrival in north London.
The Times have previously reported that the 52-year-old has been left unconvinced by the Brazilian’s potential to play as his right-sided wing-back, and it was perhaps no surprise to see the club being linked with a move for Adama Traore back in the January transfer window.
Indeed, former Spurs defender Jonathan Woodgate has recently claimed that Emerson simply hasn’t been able to acclimatise to life in English football.
He said: “If you play in La Liga like Emerson Royal has, balls don’t really go into the box that much to the back post. You don’t need to do that much defending. In the Premier League, it happens week in, week out. I’ve watched Emerson Royal and Djed Spence for Nottingham Forest, and Spence looks a different level, compared to him.”
His performances for the north Londoners this season have seen him slammed as “terrible” and “horrendous” by Noel Whelan and Woodgate respectively, and it’s perhaps the right time to permanently get rid of the 23-year-old.
Conte will be absolutely fuming if Daniel Levy doesn’t bring in the full-back that he wants this summer.
