In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Tottenham Hotspur icon Gary Mabbutt has dropped an intriguing claim over Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil.
The legendary central defender compared Dele Alli’s current situation to that of the £42.4m megastar, and how he has recently been shifted away from the starting XI by Mikel Arteta.
And in doing so, Mabbutt also claimed that he wished it was the Lilywhites who signed him back in 2013 instead.
The 32-year-old World Cup winner was omitted from the Gunners’ Premier League and Europa League squads, and has not featured for the club in a competitive fixture since their 1-0 victory over West Ham back in March, a game in which he delivered the game’s only assist.
Spurs have come up against the German a total of ten times since his move from Real Madrid.
Yet, Mabbutt believes he’d have made a great Spurs player instead…
He told FFC:
“A lot of my friends are Arsenal fans. How Ozil has been left out in the cold, for me, I find that remarkable.
“I don’t know what is going on behind the scenes, but I do know that if you’ve got a player that you’ve got a problem with, then you sit down and say ‘Look Mesut, do you want to be the best midfielder in the world? You, at the time, were regarded up there with the Ronaldo’s when you were coming through.’
“To be honest, I was frustrated when Arsenal got Ozil. I thought he’d be a great Spurs player.
“To have him and not use him [is remarkable].”
It remains to be seen whether Spurs were ever even in for Mesut Ozil after his rise to stardom in La Liga.
However, it has previously been revealed that his move to Arsenal was able to happen thanks to the departure of Spurs sensation Gareth Bale from White Heart Lane.
Dick Law, the Gunners’ former transfer fixer, told Goal:
“Real Madrid, for all of their firepower, really stretched themselves when they bought Bale. They paid an extraordinary amount of money for him, and they gave him an extraordinary contract, what that meant was they needed to sell somebody. So it’s the Bale story that leads us to Ozil.”
It’s certainly hard to imagine Ozil lining up in the white colours of Tottenham Hotspur, but it’s ever so clear to see that he’s being forced out down the road despite all of their increasing struggles.
