Tottenham Hotspur remain interested in Marcel Sabitzer despite the departure of Jose Mourinho nearly a month ago...

What's the word?

That's according to reliable football.london reporter Alasdair Gold, who delivered a fresh update on the matter in a Q&A session with supporters this week.

Spurs were initially linked with the RB Leipzig midfielder ahead of the January transfer window, with Sport Bild reporting that he sat high on Mourinho's wish list.

It now seems as if he may have been a target from above, as revealed by Gold. He said:

Best signing since...

Heung-min Son.

On the face of it, another midfielder is perhaps the last thing that Spurs' next manager needs, especially given their persistent defensive troubles, but a move for Sabitzer could be their best move since they signed the South Korean sensation.

The Lilywhites still lack creativity in the hole following the departure of Christian Eriksen nearly 18 months ago.

Jose Mourinho heavily relied on the exploits of Harry Kane, who currently accounts for 55.7% of all their league goals scored and tops the charts for creativity (1.4 key passes per game) alongside Son (two key passes per game), via WhoScored.

Neither Giovani Lo Celso (0.8) nor Tanguy Ndombele (0.5) are even close to such figures despite often being deployed in the number 10 role. They both arrived in the summer of 2020, but have combined for just seven assists since then.

By comparison, Eriksen hit at least eight assists in five of his six full seasons in north London. That is a completely different level and it is no wonder why Spurs' stars 'were unsure how to attack' under Mourinho.

This is where Sabitzer can fill a monumental void and his arrival would help to form an exciting new attack for whoever is appointed as the Portuguese's successor.

In the last 18 months, the 27-year-old Austria international has delivered 24 goals and 17 assists in all competitions, also captaining RB Leipzig to a genuine challenge on perennial champions Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

Get German Football News editor-in-chief Daniel Pinder has even likened the attacking maestro to the Danish playmaker. Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: "I think he’d bring a lot to Tottenham. He’s very similar to Eriksen, he’s that sort of player that Spurs have been missing in midfield."

Furthermore, his set piece and goalscoring ability has earned comparisons to David Beckham, whilst phrases such as "goal threat" and "remarkable" have also been used to describe him in the past.

It is thought that RB Leipzig would sell Sabitzer for around €42m (£36m), so Spurs may well have to offload some of their deadwood to raise funds - but in doing so, Levy could well secure an extraordinary signing who could eclipse even Son's arrival.
