Tottenham Hotspur seem to be linked with Demarai Gray every transfer window and this summer is no exception...

What's the word?

According to Football Insider, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has spoken to the Leicester City man personally over a potential move to north London but it'll take £20m to prize him away from the Foxes.

The 24-year-old has less than a year to run on his current contract and is someone that chief scout Steve Hitchen has been tracking for the past three years.

It's believed that Spurs even bid for him in 2017 before he signed a long-term extension at the King Power Stadium.

Potential bust

A move for the former England U21 international would be rather perplexing, to say the least.

Gray was only able to start three Premier League matches last season and was primarily used as a substitute, resulting in figures that rank worse than divisive Spurs ace Erik Lamela.

Per WhoScored, the 24-year-old delivered two goals and three assists, averaging 1.1 shots and 0.5 dribbles per game, which the Argentine betters in a very similar off-the-bench role.

For £20m, it would be an almighty risk, especially as it's unlikely Gray will be able to break into the starting XI above any of Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura or Steven Bergwijn.

There's evidently a lot of unfulfilled potential there after Brendan Rodgers claimed: "He has all the tools to play at the very highest level. If you look at speed and power, and explosiveness, technique; those are attributes he has."

So why isn't he starting more matches? That has to be a major concern.

Foxes teammate Christian Fuchs believes it's his own mind that's holding back, suggesting that the winger is "unbelievable" in training.

With Gray unlikely to be a starter, he would surely be a bust in north London and therefore, Mourinho must avoid splashing out a whopping £20m for a backup.

He still needs to bolster his backline and find a second fiddle striker.

AND in other news, Spurs £25m target could be the perfect foil for Harry Kane...
