A claim has emerged on Tottenham and their pursuit of Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay in the summer transfer window...

What's the talk?

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Spurs are not in discussions over a deal to sign the Netherlands international.

Instead, Serie A giants Juventus are attempting to snap him up on a free transfer from Barcelona in the coming weeks.

Romano tweeted:

"Memphis Depay will not join any Turkish club and there are no talks with Tottenham, as things stand. Talks are ongoing with Juventus on a two-year deal, if he will find an agreement with Barcelona to terminate the contract. #FCB Negotiations will continue also today."

Potential blunder

This could end up being a blunder from Spurs chief Fabio Paratici as Depay has the potential to be an exciting addition to the squad heading into the rest of the 2022/23 campaign.

The £158k-per-week gem has been in fine form in recent seasons for club and country and is a player who could come in and make a significant impact at the top end of the pitch.

He joined Barcelona in the summer of 2021 and enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in Spain as he ended the La Liga season with 12 goals and two assists in 20 starts.

This came after he plundered a whopping 20 goals and 12 assists in 33 Ligue 1 starts in 2020/21 for Lyon in France before his move to Catalonia.

The Netherlands international has also shown off his versatility over the years as he has played as a striker, on the left and right wing, and as a number 10/second striker. This means that he can be utilised anywhere across Antonio Conte's attacking set-up, which allows him to cover multiple areas of the pitch to fill in where needed in case of injuries and/or suspensions.

His quality and ability to play a multitude of roles could make him an upgrade on Lucas Moura in the Tottenham squad this summer.

The Brazilian attacker played 34 Premier League matches last term and produced two goals and six assists, having managed three goals and four assists in 30 outings in 2020/21.

Much like Depay, Moura is capable of playing in a variety of positions in the final third. Both players can play across the frontline and support the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son because of their ability to adapt to playing all over the pitch.

However, the Barcelona star's statistics suggest that he has the potential to offer much more than the ex-PSG man when it comes to scoring and creating goals, whilst offering the same versatility in the squad. He has proven himself in two major European leagues and may now be in the prime of his career at the age of 28.

Therefore, not being in talks to sign the attacker could be a blunder from Paratici as Juventus may now go on to benefit from his quality, whilst Moura potentially struggles to reach 10 goals and assists combined in the top-flight.
