Spurs could upgrade a Mourinho favourite with Leon Bailey swoop

Tottenham Hotspur are the latest team to be linked to one of the Bundesliga’s hottest properties this transfer window and he could be a welcome upgrade on one of Jose Mourinho’s favourites…

What’s the word?

According to Sky Sports, Spurs have entered the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey, who is open to a move to the Premier League this summer.

It’s claimed that their asking price of £40m may need to come down before the north Londoners follow-up their interest with Sunday’s victors Everton also keen on landing the Jamaican sensation.

Who would be the better winger for Spurs?

Lucas Moura

Bailey still has three years to run on his current contract at the BayArena and could be integral to their fortunes following the exit of Kai Havertz to Chelsea earlier this month.

Better than Moura?

Adding another winger to an already competitive area doesn’t seem like the wisest move from Spurs, but they can’t pass up the opportunity to sign Bailey if certain circumstances arise.

The 23-year-old was clocked as the fastest player in the Bundesliga last season whilst he contributed to a total of eight goals despite only starting 12 matches in the league.

Per WhoScored, Bailey also averaged 1.6 dribbles, 1.3 shots and one key pass per game, which is substantially better than Lucas Moura, who kickstarted his Premier League campaign without a single dribble or key pass against the Toffees.

The speedy winger has been regarded as Arjen Robben’s heir in the German top-flight due to the way he cuts in and terrorises defences.

Who was the top scorer during the 2018/19 season?

Ajax legend Ronald de Boer is a huge fan and once said: “He’s so fast it’s not normal. His speed, combined with his technique, is very rare. Exceptional. He has no weak points.”

This sort of explosive pace and ability to put defenders on the floor should have many at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium salivating, though Levy is quite right to wait to see if he can negotiate that £40m fee down a little bit.

AND in other news, Spurs could land their new Robbie Keane in £75k-per-week poacher…
