Troy Deeney: Spurs eye Watford veteran as perfect Kane backup

Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of a new striker continues to rumble on and this week another name has been mooted with a switch to north London…

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, Spurs face competition for Watford veteran Troy Deeney with Premier League newcomers West Bromwich Albion now in the hunt to clinch him this summer.

Last month, the same newspaper claimed that Jose Mourinho had been offered the 32-year-old on loan following the Hornets’ relegation to the Championship.

Would you take Troy Deeney at Spurs?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

They are keen to offload some of their high earners but Deeney only has one year left remaining on his current contract, so he could be a cheap option. He’s currently valued at just £5.85m by Transfermarkt.

Sanchez nightmare

When you think back to Fernando Llorente’s spell at the club, you’d have to consider him to be hugely undervalued and underrated as they have clearly lacked someone in his role all season.

Harry Kane got injured and Spurs soon crashed out of all cup competitions and very nearly threw away a spot in Europe, so a backup is a massive priority this summer.

And Deeney could well be the ideal foil given his experience at this level. He’s not going to pull up any trees but would prove to be a solid and reliable second choice option. He’s sure to be a hit with fans too after his infamous dig at arch-rivals Arsenal.

The 6-foot forward has scored 47 goals in 163 appearances in the Premier League, per Transfermarkt, ten of which came this season as the Hornets succumbed to relegation.

Record transfer fee paid?

Deeney wins a whopping 7.3 aerial duels and also averaged 1.7 shots and 1.1 key passes per game, via WhoScored – he’s still very much a threat.

Davinson Sanchez knows that all too well too.

Back in September 2018, the Spurs defender was torn apart by Deeney. The Colombian was forced into two fouls, lost 12 duels and had to clear the ball six times whilst the Englishman bagged a goal in the 2-1 win, according to SofaScore.

As Nigel Pearson said this season, Deeney is a “handful to play against” as well as a leader. Spurs won’t find many better options to play the second string to their leading goalscorer.

AND in other news, Spurs could land huge Lamela upgrade with swoop for “wing sensation”…
