Tottenham Hotspur aren't short of wingers but they simply can't ignore one of their mooted summer targets if reports are to be believed...

What's the word?

According to Football Insider, Spurs have made an approach to sign Sporting Lisbon sensation Jovane Cabral and they have registered their interest to the Portuguese outfit.

The 22-year-old is under contract until the summer of 2023 but they could be willing to sell in order to cut costs this summer.

It's claimed that Jose Mourinho wants attacking reinforcements and that he's also keen on Leicester City's Demarai Gray but Cabral would be a cheaper and more cost-effective alternative.

Better than Lamela?

Cabral has been in electric form this season, providing six goals and two assists for Lisbon in the Liga NOS. He also averaged a whopping 2.9 shots, 2.3 dribbles and 1.3 key passes, via WhoScored.

These are substantially better numbers than what Erik Lamela delivered for Spurs this term. The Argentine winger contributed to just three goals and averaged fewer than 1.2 shots and dribbles per appearance.

His future in north London is by no means certain either - back in May, the Daily Star hinted that Mourinho could offload Lamela this summer in order to fund moves for other signings.

PortuGOAL have likened him to Gelson Martins in the past and dubbed him a "wing sensation" whilst Man United superstar Bruno Fernandes has been somewhat a mentor to him in his career, even since his move to Old Trafford.

Speaking to Canal 11 (via InsideFutbol), he said: I didn't teach him anything. "What he did in the game is down to his quality, his ability. In my opinion, he did not have a great game because I know Jovane's quality and I think he can give more."

Daniel Levy should sanction a move for the £9m-rated Cape Verde international - he could cost just £18m.
