Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist revealed:
“Spurs are looking for a right-sided version of [Ivan] Perisic.
“[Yannick] Carrasco and [Daniel] James have both been viewed for that role. Adama has been too, but suddenly his value has shot back up to around £20million.”
The 26-year-old is seemingly out-of-favour at Molineux, sitting behind several other wing options in Bruno Lage’s pecking order and with the Portuguese also scrapping the wing-back system, there does seem to be no place for Traore.
Under former Wolves and Spurs boss Nuno Santo, the Spain international was often deployed as a right wing-back, so it’s no surprise that the north Londoners view him as a potential fit under Antonio Conte at Hotspur Way.
Perisic was transitioned into the role by the Italian head coach at Inter Milan to great effect, something that we’ve already witnessed the fruits of as the Croatian veteran, 33, has delivered two assists from his first five appearances in Spurs colours.
Traore could be ripe for the same treatment, particularly as his end product over the years has been called into question.
Across 163 appearances in the Premier League, the physical specimen has delivered only eight goals and 16 assists, though all but three of those have come for the Old Gold in 126 games, per Transfermarkt.
But it’s his ability on the ball and obvious brute strength that could make him a lethal wing-back, especially under the tutelage of Conte.
Once lauded as a “monster” by Southampton striker Che Adams, Traore ranks within the top 1% of all wingers across Europe’s elite divisions for dribbles completed per 90 (5.17) and the top 4% for progressive carries per 90 (10.39), making him unstoppable at times, as per FBref.
Such exploits of being built like a brick wall, combined with rapid pace, has even seen Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp describe the tricky winger as “unplayable” at times, which is a pretty glowing endorsement indeed.
Therefore, Conte could well discover his next Perisic with a last-ditch swoop for Traore ahead of tonight’s deadline.
