Spurs could replace Giovani Lo Celso with Nicolo Zaniolo

Tottenham Hotspur could finally wave goodbye to Giovani Lo Celso by moving for Nicolo Zaniolo…

What’s the word?

According to Calciomercatoweb, Spurs could offer the Argentine midfielder in a bid to lure the Italy international to north London. It’s thought that Lo Celso is appreciated by the hierarchy at AS Roma and is valued at around €20m (£17m).

The Serie A outfit will only sell Zaniolo for around €50m (£42m), so sporting director Fabio Paratici may well be able to lower that fee by offering up the Lilywhites flop in a swap deal.

Italian rivals Juventus are also keen on Lo Celso.

Is Zaniolo an upgrade on Lo Celso?

YES!

YES!

NO!

NO!

Bye-bye Lo Celso

This could be something of a masterstroke from the Spurs supremo as he’d be getting an absolute disaster signing off the books in favour of a player with bags of potential, one that could add an abundance to Antonio Conte’s attack.

Since Mauricio Pochettino signed him from Real Betis in a whopping £55m deal, Lo Celso has struggled to make his mark in N17, even leading to him being loaned back out to LaLiga in January, where he shone at Villarreal.

Across 84 appearances in north London, the attack-minded midfielder only managed to provide eight goals and six assists – the lowest returns of his career to date, having averaged one goal contribution every 328 minutes, via Transfermarkt.

A goal or assist every 3.6 matches isn’t good enough for a player once touted to be the man to replace Christian Eriksen at Tottenham Hotspur.

His presence around the training ground and in the dressing room isn’t great either, according to some reports. Alasdair Gold of football.london claimed that he was “a little bit awkward” to be around back in January.

Instead, Paratici could finally find that solution in Zaniolo, who despite some injury troubles, continues to impress under former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho over in the Italian capital.

How well do you know Spurs manager Antonio Conte? Question 1. During his playing days, in which position did Conte typically operate?

Last season alone, the Roma star delivered eight goals and nine assists across 42 appearances. That’s more than Lo Celso has managed in his entire Spurs career (three years).

Zaniolo, lauded as “a [Steven] Gerrard, [Frank] Lampard-type player” by former coach Stefano Vecchi, could step up to finally fill that void in attacking midfield.

Those figures alone suggest that he would be an instant upgrade on the former Betis and Paris Saint-Germain man.

Also dubbed “explosive” by Roma legend Francesco Totti, it would be wise for Paratici to follow through with his intentions of signing Zaniolo and Lo Celso could be a great makeweight in return.

It’s time to get rid of the Argentina flop, that’s for certain, and Spurs could well make the Italy sensation their seventh signing of the summer window.
