Tottenham Hotspur is a potential destination for Lorenzo Insigne...

What's the word?

That's according to Italian newspaper Corriere del Mezzogiorno (via Sport Witness), who claim that the 30-year-old is considering his options ahead of the summer, when his contract at Napoli is set to expire.

Spurs hold an interest in signing him, although it's thought that the Italy international is yet to take it into consideration.

Insigne appears unlikely to renew terms at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona after more than a decade at the club, with wages being a major stumbling block between the two parties.

CIES Football Observatory currently value him at just €20m (£18m).

Shades of Ardiles

At a diminutive 5 foot 4 in height, Insigne would hand Spurs a very intriguing and versatile option in attacking midfield. He is capable of playing on the wing, upfront and in the no.10 role.

He would hand Nuno Santo a creative threat in the final third, which is something that Tottenham certainly need.

The Italian dynamo provided 1.8 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per game in Serie A last season, via WhoScored, a feat which would see him rank favourably amongst Spurs' current options.

Heung-mon Son is currently the main playmaker in the team, managing 1.5 key passes per game, whilst only Lucas Moura (2.5) and Tanguy Ndombele (two) can boast a better dribble rate.

Insigne is actually performing at a higher rate this season, averaging 2.9 key passes each outing, on top of 3.9 shots per game, which also makes him a threat to goal.

In the words of pundit Tony Cascarino, the Napoli star is an “exceptional” player, and his tricky, short stature could earn some similarities to Ossie Ardiles, who graced the engine room at White Hart Lane for many years.

Even though he's a bit taller at 5 foot 7, the Argentinian had a certain flair that Insigne could bring back to the north London outfit.

In 2020/21, the 51-cap international delivered 19 goals and ten assists across the Italian top-flight and the Europa League, so he is certainly an exciting talent who would leave fans on the edge of their seats.

Insigne was once described as reminiscent of Lionel Messi by North Macedonia veteran Goran Pandev, whilst he has also been likened to Diego Maradona, which fitting considering the club where he's played the majority of his career.

That only provides further insight into why he could become the next Ardiles in N17, so Paratici and co must look to convince him into signing in 2022.
